Game Highlights: 2007 - 2008 Season

Monday 9/24,

SJC field hockey played Seton at home.  Varsity lost 4-0 after a tough battle and an even tougher finish.  The first half was a shut out with no goals let in by goalie Carmen Milligan and excellent defense played by Ann Vu and Kelly Glen.  In addition, middies Ivy Gaitan, Jenn Pappas, and Mary Mitchell played a great game together working the ball towards offense.

JV had a very close game versus Seton with a 1-0 lead for much of the game, but lost 2-1 at the very last moments of the game.  Sophomore Goalie Kellen Murphy had some amazing saves and standout players were Sarah Mitchell on offense, Sadie Clark and Danielle Ford at middie and great defense from Mandy Brownholtz.  JV coach Mike Ewins says of the team “they have come such a far way and are looking great!”

Thursday 9/20,

SJC traveled to St. Mary’s Ryken in St. Mary’s Maryland to play at 4pm.  Varstiy forward Edie Lyons scored the first Varsity Cadet’s goal for the season in a great play with help from a great offense and powerful middies.  The Cadets lost 4-1, but played a great game and improved upon their skills as a team greatly.  Coach Rector and Coach Turk both agree that the team has started to show a great deal more offense with increased numbers of offensive corners each game and improved communication between all members of the team.

JV played a great game as well; showing off their improved stickwork, shooting skills, dribbling and teamwork.

Friday 9/7 – Game vs. Holy Child (4-0 Holy Child)

Varsity had a rough start but an amazing finish in their first game versus Holy Child School.  Goalie Carmen Milligan played a great game and had incredible saves versus a tough competitive Offense.  Other standouts from the Varsity squad were Mary Mitchell and Jenn Pappas at midfield, both played tough for nearly the entire game despite 100-degree heat on the turf!  Kate Barry, a defender, played offense and helped to drive the ball down the field multiple times in the 2nd half in some great fast breaks towards goal.

(3-0 Holy Child)

JV played immediately following Varsity and has made great strides in learning the game, playing together as a team, and working on developing plays.  Courtney Lundquist played incredibly tough defense as a midfielder for most of the game and Goalie Kellen Murphy had great saves against the Holy Child offense.

Wednesday 9/5 – Scrimmage vs. Atholton HS (Howard County)

In the first scrimmage of the season, SJC Varsity and JV Field Hockey played Atholton HS from Howard County.

Field Hockey 2006: Season Wrap-Up

The season was filled with ups and downs as the Varsity SJC Lady Cadets battled for victory.  Despite a season of exciting wins and upsetting losses, the team continued to work together and finished strong, learning a lot for next season and building a solid foundation for the future years of the Field Hockey Program.

Some of the great highlights of the season included a victory over Seton and two games ending in tough overtime sudden death.  In addition, Ms. Megan Rector joined the coaching staff as the assistant varsity coach and Ms. Katie Hess completed her second season as head coach.  Also, Ms. Teresa Tetlow coached a successful JV team of Lady Cadets that look promising for next years JV and Varsity teams!

Several stand-out players where recognized with conference team awards, including Senior Midfielder Emily Paquin and Junior Goalie Carmen Milligan.  Another standout player was Varsity Forward /Senior Sarah Marx, who despite an injury during the season, remained with the team during all practices and games as an inspiration and example of love and dedication to the game.

Next season, SJC Field Hockey hopes to improve their conference record, reach the WCAC finals, and have a great time!
