Fine Arts

The Fine Arts Department offers students a chance to learn artistic expression through both classroom and laboratory experiences. Students can develop their artistic talents under the guidance of professional staff.
800 Foundations in Art Grade 9/10/11 1 Credit
This is an introductory art class, which will cover the fundamentals of drawing, 2D design, and 3D design. Emphasis is placed on the development of these basic skills. Assignments will build sequentially from skill building exercises to culminating projects that place greater emphasis on individual expression and personal voice. This course is the prerequisite to all other art courses in the St John’s curriculum.
802 Drawing and Painting Grade 10/11/12 1 Credit
This course emphasizes drawing and painting skills. Students will explore different types of media, techniques and subject matter. Emphasis will be placed on drawing and painting from observation. However, students will also have the opportunity to explore and develop their own personal voice through more independent projects. PREREQUISITES: Successful completion of Art 1 or Foundations in Art.
803 Introduction to Ceramics and Sculpture Grade 10/11/12 1 Credit
This course provides an introduction to ceramics and sculpture. The first semester will cover the fundamentals of sculpture and three-dimensional design. Assignments are chosen to give students a broad sample of the styles and techniques that sculptors have used in the past and present. In the second semester of the course, the fundamental of ceramics will be covered. The primary focus will be on hand-building techniques, tools and vocabulary. Students will also spend a short period on the pottery wheel. PREREQUISITES: Successful completion of Art 1 or Foundations in Art.
804 2D Design Portfolio Preparation Grade 11/12 1 Credit
This advanced two-dimensional design class will prepare students for taking AP Art or for college level art programs. PREREQUISITES: To enroll, students must satisfy a pre-requisite of two years of previous study in art during high school with a minimum of a “B” average and permission of the instructor.
805 Drawing Portfolio Preparation Grade 11/12 1 Credit
This is an advanced level Drawing class designed to prepare students for taking AP Drawing Portfolio or for college level art programs. PREREQUISITES: To enroll, students must satisfy a pre-requisite of two years of previous study in art during high school with a minimum of a “B” average and permission of the instructor.
806 3D Design Portfolio Preparation Grade 11/12 1 Credit
This is an advanced pre-AP class designed to prepare students for taking an AP Studio Art course or preparing seniors for college level art programs. PREREQUISITES: To enroll, students must satisfy a pre-requisite of two years of previous study in art during high school with a minimum of a “B” average and permission of the instructor.
814 A.P. 3-Dimensional Design Grade 11//12 1 Credit
This course is an intensive course that addresses the advanced topics of 3-dimensional design. The course follows the description provided by the College Board, and focuses on demonstrating a mastery over the elements and principles of three-dimensional design. Students will develop a portfolio of work that demonstrates quality, concentration, and breadth. Students will be expected to work independently both inside and outside of the classroom. The primary goal of the course is to give students the opportunity to work at the college level. PREREQUISITES: To enroll, students must satisfy a pre-requisite of two years of previous study in art during high school with a minimum of a “B” average and permission of the instructor. and instructor approval.

In contrast to the 2-D Design course, the Drawing Portfolio focuses specifically on skill with drawing. Students will develop a portfolio of work that demonstrates quality, concentration and breadth. Students will be expected to work independently both inside and outside of the classroom. The primary goal of the course is to give students the opportunity to work at the college level.
