The four language skills are emphasized:

All students have a basic two year foreign language requirement, although typically they pursue their language study into the third and fourth year. At all levels, teachers guide and encourage the students to acquire and perfect the four basic skills:

Listening

Listening skills are developed 1) in the classroom where teachers speak the target language, use taped exercises and have fiber-optic hook up to the internet; 2) in the computer center and the library where technology assisted interactive language exercises and hyperlinks to key internet sites are available; and 3) by the individual student who is encouraged to take advantage of each available option and to develop personal learning goals.

Writing:

Writing skills are developed in the classroom where teachers teach and reinforce in creative ways the basic language concepts. Individual teacher instruction, supplementary exercises and an Honor Society Tutor program are available to students seeking extra help. At each level, writing is an integral part of the testing program..

Reading:

Reading and dictionary skills are developed in the classroom where teachers introduce passages for reading and discussion based on the skill level being targeted. Gradually the students gain the ability to read and comprehend increasingly more challenging selections in the target language from the great authors.

Speaking:

Speaking skills are developed daily as teachers and students interact in the classroom. In the computer center and the library students can hear themselves speak through interactive CD programs. Testing includes an oral segment.

Language and Technology:

The excellent computer center is equipt to enable our students to learn and practice the language. We have a number of CD's with language programs available to the students, including vocabulary, grammar, and culture. Most programs are interactive, including practice in all four langauge skills. Students learn how to use the computer to place correct diacrytical marks and other typographic symbols into work done in the foreign language.

Classrooms:

Our classrooms are acoustically well equipped to allow for listening and repetition, small group work, and individual recitation. The sound instruments are more than adequate and provide for testing in the oral skills which are highly stressed. Each classroom has a hook up to the internet, something all of the teachers are learning to use in developing lessons that address the many learning styles.
