OUR STUDENTS

Special assignments:

Our students submit outstanding projects, including research about the many countries where the target language is spoken; making posters and displays, creating powerpoint presentations, performing skits, detailing the lives of outstanding authors, painters and philosophers; writing and performing student composed plays about historical people and events; keeping diaries on different topics; and preparing visual vocabulary presentations -- including menus, proverbs, weekend vacation schedules, displays of traffic and neighborhood signs and more! Their achievements are the pride of SJC.

Students seek scholarships from the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese:

There are many opportunities for our students to apply  for some of the  AATSP and received a certificate of recognition for their fine packet.  This year promises many potential candidates!  Felicidades, y buena suerte a todos!
 

Other experiences:

Our students have had international volunteer and educatioinal experiences.  Mary O'Donnell, '02, and Adrienne Benson, '02, Trevor Mackessy Lloyd, '03, Elena Noel, '04, and Brian King, '04 did volunteer served in Mexico, Paraguay and Honduras with the organization of  Amigos de las Americas. In the summer of 2003, Andrea Maizel, 04, studied in Salamanca, Spain.  Junior Ted Jurith, '05, did coursework in Costa Rica during the summer of 2003.  In the spring of 2004, 21 SJC language students along with three teachers toured Spain. In the spring of 2005, 20 students went to Mexico City, Puebla, Acapulco and Oaxaca, Mexico. Summer 2005, Lucy Mueller, '07, Hayter Whitman, '06, and Matt Maguire,'06, joined others from around the country to serve with Amigos in Mexico, Panamá and Paraguay. During the 2006 Spring break 12 students from SJC toured Costa Rica. Summer 2006 found three of our students serving again with Amigos! They are: Andrew Butash, '07, Vanessa Thomas-Canar, '07, and Hayter Whitman, '06. Also in the summmer of 2006, Nneka Shelton studied for six weeks in Salamanca, Spain and Chiara Tanzi spent almost the whole summer living with a family in Madrid! In the summer of 2007, Victor Ware, '07, gave eitht weeks of service to the needy in Nicaragua. In the summer of 2008 these students volunteered: Rquel Millet in Panama, Molly Doyle in Paraguay, Tark Solberg in the Dominican Republic and Victor Ware '07 in Mexico! In addition Chris and Nicholas Prust spent two weeks volunteering in Costa Rica.

News from the French Club:
The French Club sponsored a wonderful trip to Paris in the Spring of 2003 and returned in 2007!  They always have some outing or other culturally enriching experience underway -  They are planning on going to Parish the spring of 2009.

Outstanding Honor 4 Spanish Student honoured:
Kenz Meliani of the class of 2005 was awarded a scholarship from the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

News from the Spanish Club:
Trips include four separate trips to Spain, Mexico and Costa Rica between 2002 and 2008. Outings, movies, dining events on and off campus, Salsa lessons, and many more opportunities for cultural enrichment are available through membership in the club. There is lots planned for the 2008-2009 school year.
