This year, the Mother's Club, will handle committee sign up a little differently. Jane will receive a copy of each membership form. She will send an email to each member, listing on which committees they signed up to volunteer. The names will then be sent on to the committee chairs.
If you would like to sign up for another committe, or if you would like to co-chair an event, please email Jane @
JSRiggott@comcast.net.

OPEN HOUSE : Terry Reynolds and Laura Natali
October 28 11AM - 2 PM
Susie Hinton, Director of Admissions: This is the biggest recruiting event for St. John's. We are expecting about 2500 visitors between 11AM and 2PM. We need help with setup will be on Saturday 10/27. On October 28 need greeters and guides. Guides are one parent and one student per group. You need not pair with your child. Susie will come to the October MC meeting and explain overview of being a guide. Also need help in the cafeteria and with refreshments.
Terry: Last year, as a freshman parent, the open house was a great opportunity to meet other parents, especially freshman parents. Having attended open houses just the year before gave a great perspective on what to discuss and point out about SJC to visiting families.
Laura: I also had a great time volunteering at Open House last year. We are loking for new opportunities for parents to volunteer this year. We will have jobs for those who need to sit more than stand. We also need SJC parents who speak a second language. We have some non-English speaking visitors.
MOTHERS' CLUB APPAREL: Laura Natali

Committee Reports: past events
POST PROM PARTY: Primrose Horn
For the past 4 years the post prom party has been held at Dave&Busters at White Flint Mall, from 12:30 AM- 4AM.
There is no cost to the students and their dates. The students can go to the post prom party even if they don't attend the prom. The Mothers' Club provides the location, light refreshments and $30 power card for each person, and some prizes throughout the party and grand prizes, usually including a laptop.
The kids have a GREAT time. There are usually about 8 faculty/administration chaperones and 8 mom volunteers
for check-in, coat room, and prizes.
We are evaluating our post prom party plan. At the senior breakfast this month, we will ask the seniors for their ideas about post prom. We would also like to hear from he SJC parents. If you have ideas for a good post prom party location-we would love to hear from you. We have decided we will not move the post prom party back to the SJC campus. It was very labor intensive, and the kids got bored about 2AM.
USED UNIFORMS: Holly Hankins and Elvira Stamp
The Mothers' Club made a little over a thousand dollars!!!
Clean uniforms are turned in in May, sold in August. Each item of clothing is $5. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with uniform collection, sorting and selling.
USED BOOK TURN-IN and SALE: Angela McNerny and Lauren GLover
Used textbooks are turned in after finals in May. The students place their name on a card in each book. When the books are sold in August, the cards are given to the business office and money earned is subtracted off of next year's bill, or mailed to the parents if the student graduated.
The sale in August is labor intensive, moving books from storage area to the auditorium, sorting, setting up and pricing. There were not enought books turned in for all the people who waited on line beginning at 7:30 AM. Some became very frustrated. Suggestions for next year include having a volunteer who speaks Spanish to help Spanish speaking parents through the process. Also need another price gun and bins for sorting.
THANK YOU to all volunteers in May and August.
SENIOR FACULTY RECEPTION: Ellen Grifiths & Beth Marchak
An evening reception for seniors, their parents and faculty, held the week of graduation. The Mothers' Club provides light refreshments and volunteers to hostess. This is held during the week after finals when everyone is ready to begin their summer vacation. Thank you to everyone who sent in food and volunteered that evening.
Senior moms, please do not volunteer for this event - you are to just relax and enjoy!
CALLS TO NEW PARENTS: Roz Fitch
Roz was unable to join us to report on her committee. She was the victim of an assault. She is OK, but still a bit shaken. Please remember her in your prayers. We look forward to her return at the October meeting.
Pam Datcher reported: Their was a glitch with the list of incoming freshman parents, which delayed the calls. Some families were not contacted until August. We have reviewed the process, and will have the list earlier next year. Our goal is to have each family called by early August.
NEW PARENT ORIENTATION: Pam Datcher
This activity only requires a few people to offer information about the Mothers' Club at a table set up in back of the auditorium the evening of New Parent Orientation. We will no longer have a committee for this activity. This will be part of the responsibilities of the Mothers' Club Board.
REMARKS FROM THE MODERATOR
Jeff Mancabelli
Jeff gives a "state of the union" report at each meeting which includes information, what's happening around school and the calendar for the month
The Mission of St. John's is faith development. Toward that end, the students take 4 yars of religion classes, do service projects, attend masses and liturgy throughout the year, and there is a non-mandatory retreat program. We offer faith development at the time in the student's life they should embrace their faith. Mr. Ferris is the new campus minister.
The Freshman retreat is a one day experience, in Buckestown MD. About 40 students/retreat, run by seniors who are peer ministers. Information is given out in homeroom.
Sophomores have a one day retreat during the winter at Bishop Clagett.
The Juniors attend an overnight retreat at Bishop Clagett.
The Seniors are offered a 3 day Kairos retreat at the Loyola House.
At the end of the meeting, members are invited to tour the renovations done over the summer in the lobby, main office and classrooms. SJC will spend $5-10 million over the next 5 years on continued renovations.
We are looking into no longer having the used book sale.
Parents are doing more on-line buying and selling. The inventory received is not sufficient for the number of parents coming to buy. The school will look into some options, perhaps bring in a company after finals to buy used books for cash.
