Summer Service Requirements
Students are encouraged to complete their Christian Service requirement over summer vacation. In order to receive credit for service completed during summer each student must write a proposal for service. Instructions for this proposal and a sample copy of a proposal are included on this website. Students must also complete a sketchbook of their summer service experience to receive full credit toward the reflection requirement for service. This sketchbook MUST be turned in to the Christian Service offer by END OF SCHOOL on the FIRST DAY of school to receive credit. In addition to the proposal the student who completes the grade level of service must turn in the appropriate grade level sheets (time sheet, supervisors evaluation, etc.) . These sheets are available on the SJC website.
What Should My Proposal Look Like?
The proposal of service must be clearly typed and submitted with the following information:
(1) For what agency/organization will you be working? What is the address and telephone number of the agency and the name of the supervisor who will oversee your work?
(2) Over what period of time (days, weeks) will you be working? What are the dates of your involvement?
(3) What type of service will you be performing? Who will benefit from this service? How are these beneficiaries somehow needy, deprived, or suffering injustice?
(4) Does the agency really need your service and are they able to place you?
(5) What is the name of your immediate supervisor and are they willing to complete an evaluation at the end of your service?
(6) What application and interview process is necessary to work for this agency?
(7) Have you talked over with your family the idea of volunteering at this particular agency? What do they think about this idea?

For my service project, I would like to participate as a volunteer at the Baptist Home for Children and Families. I will be working during the week in the month of June and July. I believe there is a great need and many children will benefit from this service. The children and adolescents at the home receive clothing, tutoring help with schoolwork and basic educational skills, a healthy meal or simply the company of others.
The Home does need my service and the volunteer coordinator was very anxious to have me commit to a certain number of hours with the children, especially after I told him of my fluency in Spanish, my academic excellence and my desire to become a volunteer. Mr. Macedonias phone number is 7033113-8744. He is willing to write a recommendation at the end of my service. I did have an interview since the home will not accept any volunteer below the age of 16.
I have talked this idea over with my family and they are very happy about this years project. I have spoken to students at St. Johns who worked at the home last year. They said it was a great service experience working with the kids and helping them with their homework, I am looking forward to helping others.
My parents endorse my participation in the work at the Baptist Home for Children and Families.
