Emily Bones Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, & Advanced Placement Chemistry
Emily Bones completed her BS in Chemistry (2001) and MS in Secondary Science Education (2002) at the University of Rochester. She then left the snowy north to teach Chemistry at a boarding school in New Jersey for two years. After realizing warmer weather exists even further south, she joined the SJC faculty in 2004 and taught Physical Science. This year, she is teaching Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, and AP Chemistry.
John Buckley Advanced Placement Environmental Science, Ecology of Bugs, and Biology
Mr. Buckley grew up outside of Baltimore, MD, and attended the University of Delaware where he earned his degree in Entomology. Out of college, he began working for DuPont Chemical until he got the itch to move West. He moved to the Bay Area of California and became a supervisor at a job-training and education program for at-risk young adults in Oakland. While working on a variety of environmental projects in Oakland, he also became a tree specialist in San Francisco. He finally moved back east a few years ago and is in his third year of teaching at St. John's. He is a member of the Casey Tree Foundation and the Student Conservation Association- both of which have excellent summer programs, paid and volunteer, for high school students.
Michelle Chang Rhee - Honors Biology and Advanced Placement Biology
Michelle Chang Rhee is a native Washingtonian and grew up in Potomac, MD. She studied Biological Sciences with a concentration in Terrestrial Ecology at Wellesley College and earned her masters degree from Harvard University in Bioethics and School Leadership. Ms. Chang Rhee has studied Tropical Ecology in Belize and Costa Rica. She is starting her eleventh year of teaching this Fall. Ms. Chang Rhee teaches Advanced Placement Biology and Honors Biology and currently serves as the Science department chair at St. John's.
Michael Ewins - Physics and Astronomy
Michael spent the first ten years of life living here in America, but then moved back to his home in England. In 2003 he earned a BSc. in Astrophysics from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. After graduating Michael moved to Washington, D.C. where he taught science and math at the Norwood School. Michael teaches Physics and Astronomy and coaches field hockey. He also currently runs a DJ class which he hopes to start here at St. John’s.
Emily Fain - Biology
Emily Fain teaches Biology at St. John's. She is originally from Silver Spring, MD and attended Yale University where she earned her degree in Ecology
and Evolutionary Biology. Ms. Fain has always had a strong interest in Biology and found many great opportunities while working for National Geographic, the Marine Biological Laboratory and most recently Living
Classrooms where she taught students about local river ecology.
Deirdre Garahan Topics in Physics
Deirdre Garahan joined the St. John’s faculty after teaching at the Hyde Leadership Public Charter School in Washington, DC. She graduated from the University of Mary Washington in Virginia, majoring in Physics, with a minor in Math. Deirdre plans on attending graduate school in the coming year. Currently, she is teaching Topics in Physics. Deirdre is originally from New Jersey.
Andy Hogan - Chemistry
Mr. Andy Hogan is originally from Buffalo, NY where he attended St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute, a Christian Brothers school. From there, Andy attended Cornell University at which he received a degree in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Molecular and Cell Studies. Andy had the opportunity to work in research labs during all four of his years at Cornell, beginning in a yeast genetics lab and then moving to the field of chemical ecology, in which he completed his honors thesis. A great lover of science, Andy is also an avid reader and sports enthusiast who enjoys outdoor activities including skiing and mountain biking.
Katie Magnuson Physics and Advanced Placement Physics B
Miss Katie Magnuson is in her third year at St. John's and teaches both General Physics and AP Physics B. She graduated with her B.A. in Physics from Colby College in Waterville, ME., and earned her M.S. in Physics from Georgetown University. Katie is an assistant Varsity Softball coach, the Equestrian Team moderator, and an assistant Girls' Soccer coach. She has spent the last few summers running a summer Outreach Physics camp for rising ninth grade girls at the University of Maryland in College Park and playing baseball for the Virginia Flames.
Kristopher Mecholsky - Physics and Topics in Physics
Kristopher Mecholsky grew up in Gainesville, Florida and graduated from the Catholic University of America in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in physics and English. He taught physical science at St. John's from 2004-2005 and then moved back to Florida, where he taught English, to be with the woman who became his wife on February 2, 2007. He once again moved back up to D.C. to pursue his doctorate in English and has pleasantly found himself with the opportunity to continue working in physics, too, teaching at St. John's again. Kris enjoys writing, acting, directing, and playing the viola and was thrilled to have recently directed his first play in the 2007 Capital Fringe Festival.
Celeste Melanson Biology and Topics in Chemistry
Ms. Melanson teaches Biology and Topics in Chemistr at St. John's. She attended Roger Williams University, graduating in 2003 with a B. S. in Biology and a Math minor. She is a native of Washington D.C., and was a substitute teacher at The Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland. She is in her 3rd year at St. John’s.
